Sunday, poor Zoe was feeling very sick. She did not play, she did not eat, she did not want to be out of our arms and she started a fever in the evening. We still managed to have the Boyds and Carberrys over for dinner and a galette des rois!
On Monday, I got out of my staff meeting and took Zoe back to Kaiser where the doctor confirmed she still had an ear infection. Her fever was back and she just looked exhausted. The doctor said the left ear was still infected. He prescribed yet another antibiotic and referred us to a Nose, Ear, Throat (ENT) specialist.
Today, the ENT called and we got an appointment for the late afternoon. Zoe was not happy to have her ears checked again. The doctor said both ears were infected but the right one was worse. He also said she probably had a sore throat too from the look of her throat and tongue.
He gave us options: pulling her out of daycare and keeping her home (not possible!!), taking her to the hospital for IV medicine (stronger antibiotics, but if she got sick again, we'd have to start over again), or getting tubes in (yoyo?). We opted for the tubes. She is scheduled for surgery on Monday January 31st, early in the morning. If her ears are still too infected, the surgery will have to be postponed. She will have a physical exam a week prior to the surgery.
In the meantime, poor Zoe is either crying, dazed and sometimes happy. She takes both acetaminophen (every 4 hours) and ibuprofen (every 6 hours). The pain medication allows her to sleep about 3 hours in a row but rarely more and it also allows her to eat some food.
The whole ordeal is hard on all of us. The boys sometime wake up because of her crying. I am lucky if I get 3 full hours of sleep. I am up 4 to 6 times a night and on some night I just take Zoe in my bed and let her cry on my chest. Michael stays up until about midnight or 1:00 am on some nights and goes take care of her but most of the time he does not even hear her crying.
The meds are upsetting her stomach too, which leads to other problems. I just can't wait until she's better!!
